Score: experience an edgier and more experimental side of the best in Australian and international dance-making

Jeff Khan, Artistic Director of Performance Space, came to our studio last Thursday (July 24th) to talk about SCORE, a five-week festival of dance and sound-art taking place at Carriageworks from Friday 1st of August. Beside dance performances, Score will include installations, immersive environments and participatory works such as Pia van Gelder’s multi-sensory installation Psychic Synth coaxed to life by your brain-waves. A large-scale video installation Gossip by renowned Belgian video-artist and theatre-maker Kris Verdonck will be showing throughout the festival, and Verdonck will give a special key-note lecture on the opening night, Friday August 1.

Performance Space is known for championing works that take creative risks, experiment with artforms and create new experiences for audiences. Score follows this paradigm and brings an edgier and more experimental side of contemporary dance and performance including One Thing Follows Another, a performance by sound artist Gail Priest and dancer Jane McKernan that takes cues from the Fluxus and other 60s avant-garde movements.

Culminate by Force Majeure is a lab-style project supporting three emerging choreographers from culturally diverse backgrounds working with nine professional dancers. The audience will see the work that is still undergoing experimentation and witness the emergence and development of fresh voices in Australian dance.

, Jon Rose brings Ghan Tracks, one-hour performance featuring two actors, filmed footage, field recordings and instruments including a vibraphone, a bike-powered string instrument and a cement mixer full of gravel. Ghan Tracks is performed by members from two of Australia’s top new music ensembles – Ensemble Offspring and Speak Percussion.

One of the festival’s highlights is return to Sydney of Melbourne dance company Chunky Move with Keep Everything, a new work by multi-award winning choreographer Anthony Hamilton. Keep Everything is a fusion of dance, performance, light, sound and image; the work developed intuitively with little editing and the result is a stream of consciousness style of dance which shows that, sometimes, it’s important to keep everything.
